I just keep wondering - is everyone in America using public bathrooms way more than I am? You guys, those things are icky. SO MANY GERMS.
And also some real thoughts:
I think that the fear of violence on both sides is valid. Yes, transgender people have been assaulted in bathrooms. Women have been assaulted in bathrooms. Children have also been assaulted in bathrooms. I assume some men have too. It's a vulnerable place. Pedophiles and other perverts take advantage of every situation possible to do their pervy deeds. It bothers me that we're so divided on this issue that we can't seem to look at it from the perspective of trying to prevent ALL of these things.
Physical violence trumps hurt feelings. End of story. If we're comparing "this group might get raped, beaten, or killed" to "this group might feel uncomfortable" there's no competition. I don't care which group is which, preventing violence is more important than preventing awkwardness.
A couple instances of violence are not a pattern. There are going to be assholes no matter what. Laws won't change that, policies won't change that, wringing our hands won't change that. We need to be smart about this, not just reactionary.
We don't have to agree on the gender issue. Some people believe that gender is fluid and not necessarily tied to biology. Some people believe that gender and biology are essentially the same thing. It doesn't matter which category you fall under, we can all be logical about this.
People who look like men, or are trying to look like men, even if they secretly have a vagina, probably shouldn't be using the women's bathroom. People who look like women, or are trying to look like women, probably shouldn't be using the men's bathroom. There's obviously a gray area in the middle there, which I'm fine with leaving up to the discretion of the individual.
Small children shouldn't be using public bathrooms alone. There are creeps of both genders and you can't just assume that your kids will be safe among a group of strangers.
This whole "who's going to check everyone's genitals to see what bathroom they're supposed to use?" reaction is idiotic. Just stop. That's not how law enforcement works, and you sound stupid when you say this.
I don't want to live in a world where we have to google a store's bathroom policies before we go there to make sure it aligns with our individual beliefs and then decide whether to boycott the store or not.
